Dear Members and Friends,
Do you recall the age-old essay,
“What I Did During Summer Vacation”? As mentioned in the
Editorial, members of your SCECA Board had a busy summer. I’d
like to fill you in and express our gratitude to the folks who
made time in their summer schedule to work on some SCECA
projects.
As mentioned in the June issue of
The Light, members volunteered to wire a home in Bellport
for Habitat for Humanity. (Their photos appear in the center of
this issue.) Many hands helped the Picnic committee, (John
McGinn, Lester Gochman and Kevin MacLeod) make this year’s event
at Heckscher Park a success. Food, activities, fun and games
were wonderful. (There are three pages of photos of the “stars”
of this event.)
On the “business end” of things,
we interviewed attorneys and retained Jessica Schubert Nogara
Esq. to represent SCECA in 2006-07. We are grateful for the
time and effort provided by her predecessor Rob Ibraham, and
wish him well in his new and future endeavors.
I was invited to speak to a class
of electrical trade students at the Electrical Training Center.
Special thanks to Sal Ferraro for allowing me to encourage his
class to consider joining our Association. It appears that he
is grooming a fine, capable group for a great vocation.
At our June General Meeting, our
members expressed their concern with the Town of Southampton’s
plan to require electrical contractors to register prior to
performing work in the town. I composed and sent a letter to
Supervisor Heaney, who was kind enough to agree to meet with
us. Second Vice President Jack Morrell and I met with the
Supervisor and his Chief Building Inspector. We did not change
their mind about registration, but did open a meaningful avenue
of communication.
All of these items will be
addressed at our September General Meeting, so please plan to
attend. Bring a colleague, especially someone who might
consider becoming a SCECA member. We’ll also have a
presentation from the NYS Dept. of Labor, which should prove to
be interesting and informative. (Better to know the law now
than to commit an inadvertent violation.)
Again, a special thank you to
Officers, Board and Members who helped with Habitat, the Picnic,
the selection of a new attorney, communication with the Town of
Southampton, and of course, making this Association work for its
members. Have a great year!
Sincerely,
Joseph J. Mikulas
