NEWS OF NOTE:
: :
We’re all familiar with
fellow-contractor gripe sessions. They may be conducted at
supply houses, meetings or even job sites. Few take action to
support their words. Not so for John Sagl. The May 2 issue of
a Smithtown weekly featured an article, “Electrician Shocked by
the Cost of Filing Fees.” Following his visit to our Trade Show
in April, John attended a Smithtown Town Board meeting. There,
with an allotted time of about two minutes, he expressed
displeasure with the Town’s requirement for electrical
contractors to obtain a building permit prior to performing
electrical work in the town. Filing and electrical inspection
fees, according to Mr. Sagl, discourage customers from hiring
contractors who perform work “by the book,” and instead, many
jobs may be performed “under the radar.” The article states
that the Town’s Director of the Building Department, John
Bongino, indicated that the department is updating its
computerized records management system.
Past-President Joe Mikulas
met with Mr. Bongino the end of March, 2007. Questions posed
included the amount of fees collected from electrical
contractors and how they were used, and whether these funds were
used in part to find and punish unlicensed contractors, or those
who do not abide by the Town’s regulations. (The need to
streamline the permit process was also suggested.) At that
time, Joe expressed hope that Mr. Bongino or an appropriate
Smithtown Building Dept. representative might consider attending
a SCECA General Meeting in the Fall, to explain these
improvements. |
