EDITORIAL
In less than a week, your Light
editor/SCECA pres. will be flying to Houston, then driving to
Galveston. I fully expect to observe some hurricane damage, and
especially notice the quality of any electrical installations I
might see. (Haven’t you had a spouse or loved one grab you by
the elbow, saying, “Come on, we’re on vacation.)
The vast majority of SCECA members take pride and show an
interest in their chosen industry. For many of us, it’s more a
way of life, a vocation, rather than just a job. That’s probably
why many Board members and Officers go out of their way to
represent you. (See article on LIPA Redbook news.)
Of particular concern to all of us is the way your dues money is
spent. Yes, we have overhead, meeting fees, insurance, office
rental, etc. We do attempt to spend on those items for which you
show the most interest. (It appears that educational seminars
receive your top priority.)
Do you notice how some members gather to chat after a General
Meeting, while others beat a hasty retreat for the door? The
fact is, some of the best information is shared among us upon
the completion of the meeting. We have members with electrical
“specialties.” We can (and should) take advantage of their
expertise. This approach can help all of us to make money,
provide a degree of quality control, and keep a customer from
going elsewhere.
Why not communicate with your fellow contractor after the
meeting? Socialize; you may be surprised and pleased with the
outcome. I’ve often given and received referrals, knowing that
there is a mutual respect; my customers remain my customers, as
do those of my SCECA colleagues.
