It never ceases to amaze me: Just
when I’m at a loss for “new material” for newsletter articles,
something happens. Don’t get me wrong, we feature our standard
fare, announcing programs, seminars and upcoming events. We look
forward to Stu Sinclair’s “Tax Tips,” LIPA updates as well as
some excerpts from professional periodicals. Currently, Board
member Rob Szalay hopes to develop a “Did You Know,” to be
featured at General Meetings and occasionally in the newsletter.
This past month, I received the NY Burglar & Fire Alarm Assn.’s
newsletter, NY Security Signal.” It contained an article that
directly applies to our own master electrical contractors. (A
synopsis can be found in this issue of “The Light.”) In
addition, I received a promotion from a company that performs
noise surveys. Remember my comment at the October General
Meeting? It will become more complicated to run a business that
is compliant with the rules and regulations of the various
agencies that have jurisdiction over the work we perform, and
where and how we provide our services. Our elected officials
play an important role in the decision-making process. If you
chose not to vote or follow the issues that pertain to your
business, don’t complain later. It appears we’re entering a time
where political awareness and involvement may be essential to
doing business as electrical contractors.
It has been ten years since our friend, colleague and past SCECA
president Bill Gubing passed away. I used to disagree with him
regarding SCECA’s becoming politically involved. Perhaps now,
the decision is being made for us. Keeping our head in the sand
may result in having our butts kicked. Worse, we won’t even see
it coming.
