There are
occasions where your editor really scrapes for an editorial
topic, and then there are times when an idea jumps out at me.
Saturday’s Newsday provided me with “cannon fodder:” The article
“Errors spark DIY recall” describes errors in home improvement
books that could put do-it-yourselfers at risk, while performing
electrical repairs or installations. Oxmoor House of Birmingham,
Alabama published about 951,000 books, which are being recalled.
Some have Lowe’s in their title; others have Sunset. Consumers
are urged to stop using the books, sold from 1975 – 2009, and
contact Oxmoor for a refund. My question: What about
installation or repairs that have been completed? Are they safe
and/or properly done? This brings us to the next question, what
did they save by doing the work themselves? Further, what does a
consumer save by allowing another trade to perform electrical
work?
I know I’m preaching to the choir, but if we do not educate
customers and bring articles such as this to the attention of
consumers and legislators, shame on us.

Despite the fact
that it’s frigid, warmer weather, perhaps with the promise of
some work, is around the corner. So is SCECA’s Vendors’ Night
Trade Show. We ask that you plan to attend and promote the
event, scheduled for April 26, 2010.

Finally, please
plan on bundling up and attending our next General Meeting. All
of us could benefit from the presentation on marketing.
