Happy New Year,
2009? The question mark is there for the obvious reason; will it
be a happy one? Our present economic conditions have seriously
shaken our hope and optimism. However, I believe the “American
Spirit” is alive and well. Our history is replete with heroes
and courageous souls who have faced down and resolved major
problems. This one, our nation’s economic anemia, did not occur
overnight, nor will it be solved in the short term. However, I
believe every one of us can and should be part of the solution.
It may be that we finally decide to use our Association to
network jobs for one another. Perhaps we’ll finally pursue a
course or some training in an area we have avoided. (Classes and
seminars are readily available, and we can certainly take
advantage of our associate members to guide us along new
business pathways.) In short, there is hope, but we must be open
to change; the “new economy” will require new skills. SCECA
wants to be an active partner in helping our fellow members
pursue “economic recovery.” Your suggestions and questions are
welcomed; we’ll do our part. Please don’t forget to make certain
that your elected local, state and federal representatives are
doing theirs.

Here are a few
suggestions: Come on out to our January meeting to hear our
SCECA attorney speak on “Customers, Contracts, and Collections.”
Attend a LIPA seminar on the 2009 Redbook. Check with CPA Stuart
Sinclair and/or John Mangione of the PR Store for business
ideas. Attend our February meeting to hear NYBFU’s Jim Smith
discuss NEC Article 250. Details on the above can be found in
this issue of The Light. Your potential to network with
contractor and associate members can only be found if you attend
our meetings.
