There have been
recent glimmers of hope in our country’s economy. We know that
money needs to loosen up so construction projects can begin once
again. It’s rather frustrating to wait for the “trickle down.”
It’s even worse when we bid a job, perhaps for a customer for
whom we’ve worked, and see someone undercut us by a few
percentage points, and get the job. The temptation might be to
become the “lowest bidder.” Do you remember the cartoon of the
guy on the street who was the lowest bidder on every job? Please
remember the cost of doing business. There are many factors to
consider beyond licensing, insurance, permits, tools, continuing
education, etc. In addition, we have ever-increasing
jurisdictions requiring more of us. This translates into
increased direct and indirect costs to run your business. The
temptation to cut corners, wink at the NEC and win the bid might
well help to lose your business or its good name. Remember,
charity begins at home; do not give away your work. It’s high
time we hold accountable those jurisdictions that require
permits, licenses, etc. Call in unlicensed work. Put the County
Executive’s number in your cell phone. We must stick together
and defend ourselves. We pay taxes and elect candidates to
represent us; now we must hold them to it. After all, they’re
receiving a paycheck every week or two, are you?
