It can’t happen
here. This hackneyed phrase has been used by many who end up
eating their words. Well, it has happened here. According to an
article by Deborah S. Morris in the 3/22/08 issue of Newsday,
the Huntington Town Board has approved an expedited building
permit review for “…commercial and residential builders of
residential and commercial construction under 100,000 sq. ft.,
who implement a town-approved apprenticeship program.”
What does this mean to you? Well, the town’s previously approved
mandate requiring that all commercial buildings of 100,000 sq.
ft. or more must be developed with the use of approved
apprenticeship programs has been “expanded.” This new policy
will affect general contractors and their subs. In short, those
contractors with approved apprenticeship programs in place will
be fast-tracked for permit procedure. The implication is that
other applications will wait longer.
What can you do about it? I guess if you were celebrating April
Fools’ Day, you could wave the white flag. However, if you value
your way of life and business, you must become involved. I
encourage you to attend our upcoming meetings, and start
contacting your town and county legislators. After all, your
taxes pay their salary, and your vote keeps them in office.
