At a recent
SCECA Board Meeting, a member related a true story which could
serve as a wake-up call. Apparently a mechanic at a jobsite felt
ill. Symptoms included general malaise with mild chest pain
which radiated to his armpit. His helper immediately called 911.
The victim may have protested, denied or ignored the symptoms.
However, the ambulance or hospital crew revived him twice from
what was described as a “flat-lining.” Blockage was found and
repaired or perhaps stinted. (Remember, this is being related
“third-hand.”) End result, the man is alive today because
prompt, appropriate, proper action was taken. This is a wake-up
call to error on the side of caution. Better to be discharged to
family, friends or colleagues than to a funeral director. As you
know, Safety Chair Rod Jara has been stressing job safety by
providing us with “current events” examples in the newsletter
and at General Meetings. Please take your health and job safety
seriously.

We wish to
acknowledge the efforts of Vendors Night Chair Steve Nerwinski
and his staff. Please plan to visit our Trade Show on April 27,
from 3 to 9 PM at Sports Plus in Lake Grove. Folks on “both
sides of the tables” help make the event successful. It is an
opportunity to view some leading-edge products and services for
our industry. Attendees might also get answers from manufacturer
reps on parts, equipment and tools that can simplify a job and
increase business profits. In addition to raffle prizes and
Vendors’ “specials,” you can make it a night for the family as
well. Discount game tokens will be available; snacks and
beverages will be sold by the Sports Plus staff. Hope to see you
there!
Please also note May 24; our brothers from the Nassau Electric
League are holding their Installation Dinner; details on page 5.

It was
refreshing to see so many new (and old) faces at SCECA’s recent
Codes Seminar. Rest assured, putting together this event takes
much planning and many hours. From the signs that were posted to
direct attendees through the Dye Center to the Board and
Officers who greeted unregistered arrivals, planning and support
were essential. Even the laptop-projector and the chauffeuring
of Instructor Joseph Striano required special arrangement by
Seminar Chair Tom Palk, and a host of volunteers. We’re grateful
to SCECA Officers and Board members who gave up part of their
Saturday and missed parts of the presentation in order to
register and seat the influx of those who attended the Seminar.
Since the event was “sold out,” we may attempt to schedule
another date for those who registered late or were unable to
attend.
